Pet birds are the fourth most popular companion animal globally, yet many are kept in conditions that fail to meet their cognitive, social, and spatial needs, causing chronic stress and behavioural problems.
Pet birds, particularly parrots, suffer extensively from inadequate care. Feather destruction, repetitive vocalisations, stereotypic swaying, and aggression are common in under-stimulated individuals. Species that naturally form complex flock societies are particularly vulnerable to solitary confinement in small cages. Adoption of surplus parrots from rescue organisations addresses both the welfare of existing birds and the demand that drives wild capture.
