Modern animal welfare science has moved beyond simply minimising suffering to actively promoting positive experiences. Positive welfare indicators measure pleasure, play, and engagement as well as the absence of pain.
Traditional animal welfare focused on preventing the five freedoms violations — freedom from hunger, disease, discomfort, fear, and restriction. Positive welfare science goes further: it asks what animals need to actively thrive, not just survive. Play, social affiliation, exploration, and positive human contact are measurable welfare goods. Certification schemes are increasingly incorporating positive welfare indicators alongside traditional negative welfare metrics, enabling more nuanced farm assessment.
