The welfare of social insects like honey bees is genuinely uncertain but increasingly researched. Bees show pharmacological responses to opioids, stress-induced pessimistic cognitive biases, and complex behavioural repertoires suggesting experience of positive and negative states. Varroa infestation causes chronic discomfort at colony level. Standard beekeeping practices including queen clipping and colony splitting may cause distress. The precautionary principle suggests that welfare-conscious beekeeping — prioritising colony health, minimising invasive interventions, and avoiding unnecessary harm — is warranted.
