Snakes are popular pets but are frequently kept in inadequate conditions that prevent natural behaviors and cause chronic health problems.
Snakes have complex behavioral needs that are often misunderstood. Most require thermoregulation gradients, appropriate humidity, hiding spaces, and enclosures large enough to fully extend. Many owners keep snakes in undersized enclosures thinking they prefer small spaces. This is incorrect; inadequate space causes chronic stress and immune suppression. Feeding live prey causes unnecessary suffering to prey animals and stress injuries to snakes from prey defense. Force-feeding malnourished snakes without veterinary supervision causes injury. Large constrictor species require specialist care that most owners cannot provide. Burmese and reticulated pythons released into Florida have established invasive populations with severe ecological impacts.
