Fish trapped in expanding dead zones experience acute hypoxic stress as oxygen levels fall below survival thresholds. Attempts to flee oxygen-depleted water force fish to the surface where they are highly vulnerable to predation. Sessile invertebrates including bivalves, tube worms, and sea urchins die slowly in hypoxic conditions. Animals that reach surface waters are often caught by seabirds or stranded on beaches. The annual Gulf of Mexico dead zone kills enormous numbers of bottom-dwelling organisms representing a massive welfare harm from agricultural runoff across the Mississippi watershed.
