Sea otters rely entirely on their dense fur for insulation rather than blubber, making oil contamination uniquely devastating. Oiled sea otters experience rapid hypothermia and die without intensive rehabilitation. The Deepwater Horizon and Exxon Valdez spills caused significant otter mortality. Entanglement in crab and fish trap lines causes drowning. Great White shark predation on otters near central California has been identified as a major mortality factor that is preventing population recovery in some areas. Sea otters consume enormous quantities of invertebrates including urchins and crabs, creating competition with commercial fisheries. Rehabilitation of oiled otters is complex and expensive but successful programs have been developed at facilities including the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
