Laying hens have some of the most studied welfare needs in agriculture, with the transition from conventional battery cages to enriched and cage-free systems showing significant welfare improvements.
Laying hen welfare has improved significantly in systems that have transitioned away from conventional battery cages. Enriched colony cages provide perches, nesting areas, and scratching pads but critics argue they still cannot meet fundamental behavioral needs. Cage-free barn systems allow more movement but high stocking densities and inadequate litter can reduce welfare benefits. Free-range systems provide outdoor access and significantly improve behavioral welfare when ranges are well-managed. Beak trimming causes acute and potentially chronic pain and is widely considered an industry crutch that addresses injurious pecking rather than its underlying causes in poor housing conditions. Fostering good litter conditions, appropriate stocking densities, and enrichment reduces pecking without beak trimming. Higher-welfare systems including percheries and organic free-range represent the current best practice.
