Barn and farm cats provide pest control services but often receive minimal veterinary care and face significant welfare challenges from exposure, disease, and injury.
Barn cats occupy a welfare grey area between pet and working animal. As working cats, they are expected to be self-sufficient to some extent but this expectation often leads to welfare neglect. Unvaccinated barn cats are susceptible to feline panleukopenia, cat flu, and feline leukemia virus at higher rates than vaccinated cats. Unneutered barn cats breed rapidly, producing kittens that face poor survival odds in harsh conditions. Injuries from farm machinery, predators, and other cats are common. Many farmers do not consider barn cats as animals requiring veterinary care. Welfare-conscious barn cat management includes vaccination, neutering, provision of weatherproof shelter, and supplementary feeding, particularly in winter when prey is scarce.
