The transition from battery to cage-free egg production has been driven by consumer and retailer pressure, but evidence on welfare outcomes shows complexity beyond the simple cage vs cage-free distinction.
The cage-free transition is an important welfare improvement but the reality is more nuanced than marketing suggests. Enriched colony cages banned in 2012 provided slightly more space and some behavioral resources but remain insufficient for full natural behavior expression. Cage-free barn systems allow movement and behavioral expression but high indoor stocking densities can create crowding and pecking problems that reduce welfare benefits. Some studies show higher mortality in cage-free systems from injurious pecking and smothering. Well-managed cage-free systems with appropriate enrichment, lower stocking densities, and good litter quality achieve better welfare than high-density poorly managed systems. Free-range systems providing genuine outdoor access and low indoor densities offer the highest commercial laying hen welfare. The quality of cage-free system management is as important as the system itself.
