Wild deer populations in the UK have grown significantly in recent decades. Managing deer numbers for ecological and human safety reasons raises complex welfare questions about culling methods and humaneness.
Deer management involves difficult welfare trade-offs. Unmanaged populations lead to habitat degradation, vehicle collisions, and deer suffering from starvation and disease during hard winters. Culling, when done well with skilled stalkers using appropriate calibre rifles and good shot placement, can be humane. However, poor practice results in wounded animals dying slowly — a significant welfare concern.
