Modern animal welfare science recognises that good welfare requires positive experiences, not just absence of pain and fear. Positive welfare indicators include play, social bonding and exploration.
Traditional welfare assessment focused on problems — disease, injury, abnormal behaviour. The positive welfare paradigm asks: are these animals experiencing positive emotions? Research shows farm animals can experience positive states equivalent to pleasure, curiosity and contentment. Building welfare systems that create conditions for positive experiences, not just prevent suffering, represents an important advance.
