Modern commercial turkeys are among the most welfare-compromised farm animals. Their extreme growth rates cause skeletal problems, cardiovascular strain, and chronic pain from an early age. They are often unable to mate naturally. The suppression of their complex social behaviours in overcrowded, barren environments causes further suffering. Slower-growing breeds, better space allowances, and enriched environments can reduce suffering substantially.
