Otter populations are recovering in many European rivers, but water quality degradation threatens both their survival and welfare.
Otters are energetically demanding animals: they must consume 15% of their body weight daily in fish to survive. When water pollution or abstraction reduces fish stocks, otters face energy deficits, reduced reproductive success, and starvation. Road kills cause acute suffering. Ensuring clean rivers with adequate fish populations is the foundation of otter welfare. Otter-friendly road crossing structures (underpasses and ledges) substantially reduce road mortality.
