Welfare Considerations

Polar bear captivity represents one of the clearest cases where the gap between zoo environments and species needs is simply too large to bridge. The stereotypic pacing seen in almost all zoo polar bears is a direct behavioural indicator of chronic psychological distress. While some zoos have substantially improved enclosures, no zoo has been able to eliminate stereotypies in polar bears. Conservation arguments for captive polar bears are weak given the impossibility of reintroduction. A phased end to polar bear captivity is the most ethical course.
