Gut Health and Welfare in Domestic Rabbits

Gastrointestinal stasis is a leading cause of suffering and death in pet rabbits, largely preventable through proper diet.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pet rabbits in GI stasis experience severe abdominal pain, often silently — rabbits mask illness until crisis point. The condition is overwhelmingly diet-related and preventable. A rabbit fed unlimited grass hay, minimal pellets, and fresh leafy vegetables has excellent gut motility and dramatically lower GI stasis risk. Muesli-style rabbit foods — widely sold but inappropriate — cause selective feeding and nutritional deficiency. Owner education is the single most important intervention for rabbit GI welfare.
