Welfare Considerations

The small bowl is probably the most welfare-damaging piece of pet equipment sold routinely in shops. Goldfish in unfiltered bowls experience ammonia poisoning, oxygen depletion, temperature fluctuations, and complete sensory deprivation. These are not fish living short happy lives — they are fish living short stressed lives, showing crowding stress behaviours and suffering chronic toxic exposure. The casual dismissal of goldfish welfare — based on myths about memory and stupidity — is not supported by modern fish cognition research.

What You Can Do

Never keep goldfish in unfiltered bowls or insufficient water volume
Research minimum tank size and filtration requirements before acquiring goldfish
Adopt rather than buy goldfish, who are frequently surrendered by uninformed purchasers
Campaign for accurate welfare information on goldfish product labels
Support legislation requiring minimum aquarium size information at point of sale
