The Science of Pig Enrichment: Evidence and Standards

Scientific evidence on pig enrichment has identified which materials and approaches genuinely improve welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Not all enrichment is equal. Research has established a hierarchy of pig enrichment: materials that can be rooted, chewed, and manipulated (straw, jute, compost, soil) provide genuine welfare benefit. Fixed, non-manipulable objects like chains meet the legal minimum but provide minimal behavioural satisfaction. The gap between letter and spirit of enrichment regulations is large in intensive pig farming. Consumer and retailer pressure for meaningful enrichment standards — not just object provision — is needed to close this gap.
