Captive snakes suffer primarily from inadequate space, incorrect temperature gradients, and improper humidity. The small glass vivarium — sold widely for snake keeping — is inadequate for most species as adults. Ball pythons in undersized enclosures show elevated stress responses and increased feeding refusals. Respiratory infections from poor environment are a major welfare concern that reflects husbandry failure. The welfare burden of snake keeping is largely preventable through proper enclosure design and consistent environmental management.
