Cage-Free Egg Transitions: Progress and Challenges

The global shift toward cage-free egg production is progressing but faces significant implementation challenges.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The cage-free transition represents genuine welfare progress for laying hens — the ability to walk, spread wings, and perform some natural behaviours is a significant improvement over battery confinement. But cage-free is not welfare-complete: keel bone fractures, feather pecking, and litter quality issues remain significant challenges in cage-free systems. The transition narrative should acknowledge both the genuine progress and the remaining welfare frontier, avoiding the trap of treating cage-free as welfare-solved rather than welfare-improved.
