Welfare Considerations

Guinea pig welfare is poorly served by traditional hutch and cage keeping. Small enclosures prevent the running behaviour essential to their physical health; solitary keeping removes the social contact essential to their psychological health; pellet-heavy diets without adequate hay cause gut problems and vitamin C deficiency. Pair or group housing, large enclosures with environmental complexity, and ad-lib hay provision are the three fundamental welfare requirements. These are achievable for almost any keeper with appropriate education and low additional cost.
