Routine antibiotic use in intensive livestock production masks poor welfare conditions and creates antimicrobial resistance, while high-welfare systems demonstrate that healthy conditions can reduce antibiotic dependency.
Heavy antibiotic use in livestock is both a symptom and an enabler of poor welfare: animals in overcrowded, stressful conditions develop more disease, requiring more antibiotics, which in turn allow poor conditions to continue rather than being addressed. Reducing antibiotic dependence requires fundamentally improving welfare conditions.
