Welfare Considerations

Grey wagtails are highly sensitive to water quality and river management. Pollution that eliminates aquatic invertebrates removes their food source. Bank management that removes overhanging vegetation eliminates nest sites. Severe winters cause population crashes as frozen rivers prevent access to food. Drought periods can expose breeding birds to predation when water levels fall.
