Harvest Mouse: Britain Smallest Rodent in Decline

The harvest mouse is the only British mammal to use its prehensile tail for climbing and has declined severely with agricultural intensification.

Welfare Considerations

Harvest mice face welfare threats from agricultural intensification that eliminates the tall rough grass and cereal fields they need. Mechanical harvesting destroys nests and kills animals. Loss of hedgerow bases and rough grassland removes overwintering habitat. Reed bed drainage eliminates important refuges. Cats and other predators take significant numbers from isolated rural populations.
