Kingfisher: Jewel of the Riverbank Under Threat

The kingfisher is one of Britain most spectacular birds but faces severe welfare threats from water pollution and disturbance.

Kingfishers need clean shallow rivers with small fish and vertical earth banks for nesting

Welfare Considerations

Kingfishers are heavily impacted by water pollution which reduces visibility for hunting and kills the small fish they eat. Bank reinforcement with concrete or sheet piling eliminates nesting habitat. Severe winters cause starvation when rivers freeze and cannot be dived. Human disturbance during breeding can cause nest abandonment. Flooding of nest tunnels drowns eggs and chicks.

Encourage natural bank management that retains soft earth for nesting
Maintain respectful viewing distances at known kingfisher nest sites
Report water pollution incidents to the Environment Agency immediately
