Linnet Welfare on Farmland and Heathland

The linnet has declined dramatically on farmland but remains more stable on heathland and coastal areas.

UK linnet populations fell by 57 percent between 1970 and 2019
They feed almost exclusively on seeds preferring weed seeds from arable farmland
Linnets nest in low scrub especially gorse and bramble patches
They form large winter flocks that roost communally in hedgerows
Males have a beautiful red forehead and breast in breeding plumage

Welfare Considerations

Linnets are highly vulnerable to changes in agricultural practice. The switch from spring to winter sowing has eliminated the weed-rich fields they depend on in summer. Improved drainage and herbicide use has reduced the arable weeds that once provided abundant food. On heathland, inappropriate management including burning and mowing at the wrong time disrupts nesting.

Support conservation headland schemes on arable farms that allow weed growth
Encourage heathland managers to leave unmanaged patches of gorse and scrub
Report instances of illegal nest disturbance to the RSPB
Support agri-environment payments that reward wildlife-friendly farming
Plant a mix of native seed-bearing plants in gardens and community spaces
