Roe deer are the most widespread native deer in Britain and their welfare is linked to woodland quality and road risk.
Roe deer welfare is affected by habitat fragmentation that forces animals to cross roads more frequently. Fawns separated from their mothers may be misidentified as abandoned and inappropriately taken into care. Agricultural operations can injure or kill animals sheltering in crops. Disease including bovine TB can affect roe deer in areas with high cattle infection levels.
