Modern animal welfare science increasingly focuses not just on preventing negative experiences but on actively promoting positive states including play, curiosity, and species-appropriate pleasures.

Animals have capacity for positive experiences including curiosity, play, social bonding, and physical pleasure that deserve active promotion. Systems providing only basic needs may keep animals alive without suffering while still denying them a genuinely good life.
