Rats are intensely social animals whose welfare in research settings depends critically on social housing, yet single-housing remains common in many institutions for operational convenience.
Single-housing of laboratory rats causes chronic psychological stress that is well-documented in welfare science. Isolated rats show higher baseline anxiety, impaired immune function, and greater pain sensitivity — all of which also compromise the validity of research data obtained from them. Social housing is simultaneously a welfare improvement and a data quality improvement.
