Commercial octopus aquaculture is being actively developed despite growing scientific consensus that octopuses are sentient beings with complex welfare needs incompatible with current farming proposals.
Octopuses are among the most cognitively sophisticated invertebrates, capable of problem-solving, play, individual personalities, and possibly emotional states. The requirement to farm them in solitary, barren conditions — antithetical to their behavioral needs — would create conditions of chronic suffering for animals we increasingly recognize as deserving moral consideration.
