Hamsters are nocturnal animals whose welfare needs — including large burrowing spaces, wheel exercise, and nocturnal activity — are almost universally unmet in typical pet trade housing.
Hamsters in typical commercial cages cannot run adequate distances, dig natural burrows, or maintain their nocturnal activity patterns without disturbance. The combination of inadequate space, enforced daytime interaction, and lack of burrowing opportunities creates chronic welfare compromise for the majority of pet hamsters. This welfare failure is so widespread it represents a systemic problem with how hamsters are sold and housed.
