Welfare Considerations

Tail biting is not a pig pathology — it is an environment pathology. Pigs are highly motivated to root and explore, and in barren environments they redirect this motivation onto pen mates. The biting behaviour rapidly becomes injurious, causing serious wounds, spinal abscesses, and death in severe cases. Tail docking reduces the severity of injuries but does not address the underlying welfare problem. Enriched environments with rooting material are the only effective long-term solution.
