The dormouse has declined by 70 percent since the late 1990s and is now restricted to patches of ancient woodland.
Dormice face welfare challenges from woodland fragmentation that prevents movement between isolated populations. Poor quality hibernation sites in cleared woodland can cause failure to accumulate sufficient fat reserves and death during hibernation. Cold wet summers reduce insect prey and berry crops reducing body condition. Illegal disturbance of hibernating animals constitutes a welfare offence.
