Pet snakes have complex needs that are often misunderstood, leading to widespread welfare problems in captive animals.
Pet snake welfare suffers from persistent myths — that snakes are simple animals needing only a small vivarium, heat mat, and occasional feeding. In reality, snakes need thermally graduated environments, appropriate humidity, security hides, substrate for burrowing, and mental stimulation through feeding enrichment. Failure to provide these leads to respiratory infections from incorrect humidity, immune suppression from thermal stress, and chronic frustration. Research into snake cognition is revealing these animals are more behaviourally complex than traditionally assumed.
