Feral cats living without human care face significant welfare challenges, with trap-neuter-return programs offering a humane management approach.
Feral cats face endemic welfare problems including infectious disease (particularly FIV and FeLV), malnutrition, injury, and parasites. They have measurably shorter lifespans and poorer health than domestic cats. TNR programs improve individual welfare by providing neutering, vaccination, and monitoring while stabilising and gradually reducing populations. Well-managed colonies with regular caretaker provisioning provide significantly better welfare than culling, which creates population vacuums rapidly refilled by new cats.
