Stocking density is one of the most significant determinants of fish welfare in aquaculture. At high densities, fish experience chronic stress from crowding, compete aggressively for space, and suffer immune suppression that increases disease susceptibility and mortality. The economics of aquaculture create pressure to maximise stocking density, but this directly conflicts with fish welfare. Regulatory maximum densities and market certification with density requirements are the most effective levers for improvement.
