Invertebrate welfare represents one of the most contested frontiers in welfare science. The diversity of invertebrate nervous systems makes sweeping generalisations impossible — the welfare relevance of killing a flatworm differs from that of killing an octopus or a bee. The precautionary principle suggests that where evidence of nociception exists, at minimum rapid killing is preferable to slow suffering. The sheer scale of invertebrate numbers means that even small welfare probabilities translate to vast numbers of welfare-relevant events.
