Technology-enabled precision livestock farming offers new opportunities to monitor and improve animal welfare at scale.
Precision livestock farming technologies offer genuine welfare potential. Early detection of lameness, mastitis, respiratory disease, and behavioural changes allows earlier intervention before welfare compromise is severe. Continuous monitoring is possible at scales that manual observation cannot achieve. However, technology can also be misused — automated systems that normalise poor welfare as baseline rather than flag it for improvement, or that replace human stockpersons whose welfare-relevant relationships with animals have real value.
