Welfare Considerations

Shade and water are fundamental welfare provisions for cattle on pasture that are frequently inadequate in commercial settings. Heat-stressed cattle experience chronic discomfort and physiological stress affecting immunity and productivity. Inadequate water supply causes dehydration during peak demand periods in hot weather. Trough space that seems adequate in normal conditions may become a bottleneck in heat causing subordinate animals to be excluded. Trees provide the best shade and have additional ecological benefits.
