Welfare Considerations

Rooting is to pigs what foraging is to other species — a fundamental behavioural drive that must be expressed for welfare. In the wild, pigs spend 50%+ of their time rooting for food. In barren commercial housing, this motivation is expressed inappropriately on pen mates, causing tail biting and ear chewing. Providing appropriate substrate — straw, wood shavings, or compost — dramatically reduces abnormal behaviour. The persistent gap between the legal requirement and actual provision of enrichment on farms is one of the largest identifiable welfare failures in European pig production.
