Animal welfare labels on food products vary enormously in rigour and the independence of their verification.
The proliferation of animal welfare labels has created consumer confusion about which labels represent genuine welfare improvement and which are marketing without substance. Key questions for evaluating any welfare label include: Is verification independent? Are outcome-based welfare indicators assessed not just inputs? How frequently are farms inspected? What happens when farms fail standards? Labels backed by independent accreditation bodies using outcome-based measures with meaningful enforcement are most credible.
