Dogs are social animals whose welfare fundamentally requires appropriate social contact and relationships.
Canine social welfare is one of the most frequently compromised welfare dimensions in modern companion dog keeping. Dogs left alone for 8-10 hours while owners work experience chronic social deprivation that is welfare-harmful. Social contact with humans partially satisfies social needs but does not replace conspecific interaction for many dogs. The welfare consequences of social isolation include anxiety, depression, and separation-related behaviour problems that frequently lead to relinquishment. Working patterns that require leaving dogs alone for extended periods require mitigation through daycare, dog walkers, or second dogs.
