Welfare Considerations

Pet turtles suffer from a predictable set of welfare failures: inadequate UV-B lighting causing metabolic bone disease, inappropriate temperatures causing immune dysfunction, insufficient protein and calcium causing shell malformation, and tanks far too small for adequate exercise. Metabolic bone disease is extremely painful. The cute baby turtle sold for a few dollars becomes a decades-long commitment that most owners are unprepared for. Mass abandonment of unwanted turtles creates ecological damage and individual animal suffering simultaneously.
