Supplementary feeding of wild birds is one of the most popular wildlife interactions globally, with complex welfare implications for individual birds and ecosystems.
Bird feeding can genuinely benefit birds during harsh winters when natural food is scarce. However, it can also cause harm: dirty feeders spread disease epidemics through concentrated populations, window placement causes collisions, and inappropriate foods impair health. The welfare case for feeding is strongest in winter in cold climates where survival benefits are clearest. Year-round feeding may reduce migration fitness and reduce adaptive foraging behavior. The key is feeding right: clean feeders, appropriate food, safe placement.
