Cephalopods — octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish — are now protected under UK and EU animal welfare law following evidence of their sophisticated sentience.
The extension of sentience recognition to cephalopods is scientifically justified and represents a significant advance in animal welfare law. These animals have complex pain responses, show behavioral flexibility, exhibit what appears to be emotional states, and make decisions reflecting cost-benefit reasoning. Current welfare concerns include commercial fishing (bycatch and targeted catch), handling stress, and holding in aquariums. As farming proposals emerge, welfare considerations must be built into any regulatory framework from the start rather than retrofitted later.
