Greyhound racing has declined significantly in the US and UK due to animal welfare concerns, but remains active in Australia and several other countries.
Racing greyhound welfare concerns include intensive kennel housing with limited human contact, injuries during races (particularly fractured limbs), performance-enhancing drug use, and — most critically — what happens when dogs are retired or deemed unsuitable. Historically, many greyhounds were killed at end of racing life. Industry reform has improved retirement outcomes in some jurisdictions, but tracking and accountability remain weak. The welfare solution involves both improving conditions during racing and dramatically expanding adoption programs to give retired greyhounds loving homes.
