As concern grows about the environmental and ethical impacts of meat-based pet foods, interest in plant-based diets for dogs and cats is increasing — raising complex welfare questions.
The ethics of vegan pet food are genuinely complex. Dogs can thrive on well-formulated plant-based diets, and given the welfare harms in pet food supply chains, this reduces their contribution to farmed animal suffering. Cats are more difficult — obligate carnivores with specific nutrient requirements that must be synthetically supplemented in vegan formulas. Research on long-term health outcomes in vegan cats is limited. The welfare case for plant-based dog food is stronger than for cats; both require veterinary guidance and high-quality formulations with appropriate supplementation.
