Beavers — Reintroduction Welfare and Conflict Management

Beaver reintroductions across Europe and North America are generating conservation success and welfare challenges as returned populations encounter human infrastructure.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Beaver reintroduction raises welfare considerations at multiple levels. Individual beavers translocated for reintroduction experience capture stress and new territory challenges. Beavers that create flooding conflicts are often killed rather than relocated, raising welfare concerns about the management of successful reintroductions. Lethal control of beavers is the path of least resistance for governments but does not address underlying human-beaver conflict. Non-lethal flow management devices (beaver deceivers) can redirect water and prevent flooding while allowing beaver families to remain.
