Aquatic Invertebrate Welfare in the Seafood Industry

Crabs, lobsters, shrimps, and other aquatic invertebrates are consumed in enormous quantities with little consideration of their capacity for suffering during capture, transport, and preparation.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Aquatic invertebrate welfare is an emerging field with growing scientific support. Crabs and lobsters show complex avoidance behaviors, protect injured limbs preferentially, and show physiological stress responses. The precautionary principle argues for treating them as potentially sentient. Live chilling before killing reduces behavioral indicators of distress. Spiking (piercing the ganglia) or electrical stunning provide more humane alternatives to live boiling. The scale of crustacean consumption means even modest welfare improvements applied consistently would prevent enormous amounts of potential suffering.
