Alpaca shearing practices vary significantly in welfare impact. In Peru, shearing is often conducted by restraining animals on their sides on the ground, causing considerable distress. In better-practice operations, alpacas are restrained in standing positions with minimal time. Rough handling and use of pain-causing restraint methods are common in some regions. Dental trimming and nail clipping are also welfare-relevant procedures. The global fiber industry has been slow to develop and enforce welfare standards; buying certified fiber or contacting brands about sourcing practices is currently the most effective consumer lever.
