Natural disasters including floods, fires, and hurricanes cause enormous livestock welfare crises that are frequently overlooked in emergency planning and response.
Livestock welfare in disasters involves both acute suffering during events and chronic suffering in aftermath. Animals trapped in flooded facilities may survive initial flooding only to die slowly from starvation or disease. Evacuation of large livestock is logistically difficult and underplanned. After fires, surviving animals with severe burns face prolonged suffering before euthanasia reaches them. Better planning — including evacuation routes for livestock, pre-arranged foster farms, emergency feed stockpiles, and mobile veterinary teams — can substantially reduce disaster welfare impacts.
